Garlic Basil Bread

I just love the aroma of Garlic and Basil !!! I often combined them together in some recipes to make it more flavorful. The dishes like pasta, macaroni and bread are my all time favorite one. Garlic bread is a common menu on breakfast. The toasted bread with garlic butter is so yum!!!  I tried to bake Garlic Bread with flavors of basil and it is just Heavenly. The taste of Garlic and the aroma of Basil are irresistible.

Chilli Garlic Bread

Ingredients:

  • Refined flour/maida – 2 cups
  • Dry active yeast – 1 ½ tsp
  • Sugar – 1 tsp
  • Salt – ½ tsp
  • Luke Warm water – 1 ½ cup
  • Garlic (finely chopped) – 8 cloves
  • Fresh basil leaves(finely chopped) – 8 to 10 leaves

Method:

  • The most important step is proofing the yeast i.e. testing the activeness of the yeast. If the yeast is not active the bread will not rise. Just as baking powder is the most important ingredient for baking cakes so is the yeast for baking bread. So for proofing take 1 cup of luke warm water in a glass bowl and add 1 tsp of sugar. Mix. Add 11/2 tsp of yeast. Give a gently stir. Cover it and leave it aside for 15 mins. The temperature of the water is very important in this step. Cold/room temperature water or too hot water will not create carbon dioxide in the dough and it will not rise. After 15 mins observe the change. If the mixture foams up that means the yeast is active and if it remains unchanged the yeast should be discarded.

  • If the mixture has foamed up proceed further. Don’t give a try if the mixture has not foamed because the whole material and efforts will be wasted.

  • In a bowl take 2 cups of refined flour/maida. Add salt.
  • Pour the yeast mixture and mix. Knead to dough adding little water.
  • Knead it further for 10 to 15 mins till you get soft dough.
  • Add the chopped garlic and basil to the dough and knead so that both are evenly distributed.

Garlic Bread

  • Shape into a loaf lengthwise i.e. length of the bread tin in which it has to be baked.
  • Keep it in a pre-grease bread tin and cover gently with aluminum foil leaving enough space as the dough will rise.
  • Keep in a clean and damn area for 1 hour.
  • Pre – heat the oven at 250 °C for 10 mins.
  • After 1 hour you will observe the dough has raised double to its previous size.
  • Apply butter gently over the dough.
  • Bake at 180 °C for 25 mins.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool.
